To be a successful advisor in a university setting, it is important to understand your own advising style in interacting with students. This presentation examines several different styles of advising by looking at different "hats" we wear on a daily basis. Based on the "Playing the Mad Hatter" activity by Shirley Richardson and Dotty Alexander, the material presented is intended to provide new advisors with a starting point for understanding and developing their personal style in relation to their specific advising role, while seasoned advisors may discover ways that they can break out of their routine advising strategy.
